Mary Lou Powers, RN, receives an award from resident Bradley Blaser, MD, PhD. Katrina Harris receives an award from resident Bridgid Dolan, MD.
One night during a rotation on a Hematology/Oncology unit early in her intern year, medical resident Jane Lowe Meisel, MD, admitted a patient with pneumonia, sepsis and hypotension.
Meisel was afraid the woman might not make it through the night, and she credits Grace Adrole, BSN, RN, for providing the excellent nursing care that helped successfully guide the patient through the treatment.
“Grace was by the bedside nearly all night and kept me aware of everything that was going on,” said Meisel, who nominated Adrole for an Internal Medicine Housestaff Nursing Award. “She also gave me wonderful guidance and gently answered all of my oncology-specific questions. I’m not sure if she remembers that night, but I will remember it forever.”
BWH residents came together May 13 to recognize the impact nurses and Patient Care Services staff have on their education during the annual Internal Medicine Housestaff Nursing Awards ceremony. Adrole was among 15 BWH and Faulkner Hospital staff who were honored.
During the ceremony, residents who nominated the nurses presented the awards and spoke about how each honoree has played a role in their education.
“I have learned a great deal from Sara’s sophisticated clinical knowledge, critical thinking in patient care and unending patience,” said Stacy Charat, MD, who nominated Sara Stankiewicz, BSN, RN, PCCN, for an award. “Your patients are very lucky to have you, and we as residents feel even luckier to work with you.”
In total, 65 nurses and Patient Care Services staff were nominated and acknowledged during the ceremony. “Nurses inspire us, and we’re so thankful that they share their immense knowledge with us,” resident Bridgid Dolan, MD, told the packed Carrie Hall audience during the opening remarks. Dolan co-chaired the event with Lydia Pace, MD.
